With nine games left in the regular season, the Buffalo Sabres find themselves trying to hold onto the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Sabres sit in eighth with 81 points, three points ahead of ninth-place Carolina and five points ahead of Toronto.

Buffalo basically eliminated Atlanta on Saturday night, routing the Thrashers 8-2. Atlanta now trails the Sabres by nine points.

The Sabres have won 6 of their past 10, earning 13 points during that stretch. Buffalo finds itself at home for three of their final four games of March.

All of them are big games this time of year, but the one road game looms especially large: Tuesday night at Toronto. Buffalo returns home the next night to face the Rangers, who lead the Sabres by three points for seventh place.

Through the first half of the NHL season, the Buffalo Sabres have split the results so far.

The Sabres have won 18 games, lost 18 games and dropped five points in overtime for 41 points through the 82-game schedule.

Buffalo begins the second part of the season tonight at home against Eastern Conference leader Philadelphia. The Sabres lost to the Flyers in the only matchup so far this season, 6-3 on Oct. 26 at Philadelphia.

Buffalo has gone 5-4-1 in its past 10 games. The Sabres’ recent surge, including a 2-0-1 road trip, brings Buffalo within eight points of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Sabres play host to Carolina on Thursday, travels to face the Islanders in New York on Friday and plays host to Montreal on Jan. 18.

The regular season transpired just fine for the Buffalo Sabres in 2009-10. In the new season about to begin, the defending Northeast Division champions would love a better spring that the one previously experienced.

Buffalo was an Eastern Conference power last season, winning the Northeast and finishing third in the conference standings. But the Sabres’ summer started way earlier than they hoped, as Buffalo was bounced in six games by Boston in the opening round.

The Sabres celebrate their 40th season in 2010-11, and they open the campaign with high hopes. U.S. Olympic hero Ryan Miller returns to anchor goaltender. All-Star Rob Neidermayer and Jordan Leopold highlight the offseason acquisitions.

Buffalo also brings back left winger Thomas Vanek, the team’s top goal scorer from a year ago, defenseman and captain Derek Roy, and center Tim Connolly.

The Sabres open the season Oct. 8 at Ottawa. The home opener is one night later against the New York Rangers.
